Eight Adult Education Volunteer teachers received certificates of recognition at a Dinner and Awards ceremony on Thursday, at the Public Service Union Building in Roseau.
The teachers were selected by the Adult Education Division from various education zones across the country, for their hard work and dedication towards building adult capacity.
Those receiving awards included Kirk Edwards, Philbert Joseph, Dhanelle Cuffy, Helen Sabin, May Honore, Ayisha Richards,Luther Martin, and Claudia Toussaint.
A Special award for “Dedicated Service” to the Adult Education Division was bestowed on Gieselle Ettienne.
Martha Andre, Adult Education Officer of the Adult Education Division congratulated the award recipients for being agents of change within their respective communities.
“I want you to consider the contribution that you have made to the Adult Education Program and to your community development. We are agents of change and we have to be seen as agents of change in our communities. We cannot afford to just sit back and see things go on and say is so it is. We must now put our foot forward and try to aid in the development of our communities and our people” Andre noted.
Minister for Social Services Community Development and Gender Affairs Hon. Gloria Shillingford thanked the teachers for their level of dedication to education.
“Your selection tells the entire country that you have contributed beyond measure, that you have put love for your fellowmen before love for yourself. For it is only this that would give you the drive to continue year after year volunteering your services to the development of your fellow citizens” remarked Minister Shillingford.
The Awards ceremony formed part activities in observance of Adult Education Month 2013.
