Four computers, a printer and printing materials were presented to the Belles Primary School last Thursday.
The presentation was made by Parliamentary Representative for the St. Joseph Constituency Hon. Kelvar Darroux. He says, government continues to place tremendous emphasis on the importance of Information and Technology in schools.
“We believe this is one of the driving forces of education, particularly for children at primary schools. This is why we are making an earnest effort to ensure that all of our primary schools on the island are equipped with computer labs. We understand that students being exposed to information technology at an early age will give them a better understanding when they enter high school and tertiary level institutions.”
The government of Dominica has embarked on a one laptop per child policy initiative. Hon Darroux expounded further.
“We continue to work progressively towards our plan for the one laptop per child policy that we hope to implement later on this year. We believe also that students have to be exposed to different forms of learning with the use of the computers. These computers will go a long way in really benefitting these students here at the Belles Primary School and making them better able to do their research and being computer literate. I am sure that the teachers will put the computers to good use and the students themselves will take great care of these computers.”
The Parliamentary Representative had high commendations for the teachers at the Belles Primary School.
“The Belles Primary School is located in the centre of the country and that doesn’t mean that it has to be forgotten. This is a school that I place a lot of emphasis on, particularly because the teachers here are doing a tremendous job in ensuring that the students of Belles and the Pond Case area receive a good education. I must commend Ms. Christopher and her team of teachers who have been working tirelessly to assure that the highest level of education can be attained here at the Belles Primary school and we saw some good results here at the National Assessment Examination.”
Principal of the Belles Primary School Violine Christopher said thanks on behalf of the students and teachers. She says the computers will assist students in doing their research projects and assignments.
“On behalf of the Principal, Staff and students of the Belles Primary School, we would like to say thanks to you Mr. Darroux for this timely presentation. I must say it has been a while in coming but rather late than never. I am sure that the teachers and students are going to put these computers to use. Research is going to be much easier because in the past, the children had problems in completing projects. They would say we have no computer at home or we have no internet service and even at school we had no computers to help them so now there’s no excuse for not doing projects and assignments. Once again I’d like to say thanks to you.”
The Parliamentary Representative disclosed that through a project of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC), broad band coverage in the Belles area was recently enhanced. He said with the high speed internet access now available in that part of the country, students of the Belles Primary School will have guaranteed access to the internet.
