Despite the ever-expanding toll of the global economic crisis, the Government of Dominica continues to allocate funds towards infrastructural development projects on the island.
Recently Prime Minister Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit allocated EC $2m to improve farm access roads across the country.
One of the roads receiving attention under this project is the Mero /Cuba /Carholm road.
Parliamentary Representative for the St. Joseph Constituency, Hon. Kelvar Darroux says this road which is currently being rehabilitated when completed will be a blessing to the farmers of the area.
“The Government of Dominica is investing E.C $157,000.00 to ensure the rehabilitation of this road. This is a project which falls under the farm access road project announced by the Prime Minister recently. Through this programme the Prime Minister has made available E.C $2m to ensure that farmers of Dominica have better roads to access their farms.”
The St. Joseph Constituency is a very large farming area and we have placed tremendous emphasis in ensuring that we can restore the road surfaces in those areas.”
“This road project,” Hon. Darroux added “is a tangible manifestation of Government’s interest in improving the lives of farmers in the St.Joseph constituency.”
He said further “The Government remains committed to ensuring that we have the roads in this country of a very high standard and that is very important especially these farm access roads where we have seen a number of these farmers abandoned their farms. We want to encourage the farmers to go back to their farms.”
Hon. Kelvar Darroux confirmed that the road project has provided much needed employment for residents of the area. A contractor from the St. Joseph constituency was hired by Government to undertake the road project.
