A contract has been signed to the sum of $3.05 million for the rehabilitation of Charles Avenue.

The contract was signed between the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Works, Denise Eswards and Offshore Civil and Marine Incorporated.

“The project will include the rehabilitation of 510 metres of road from the round-about near the Princess Margaret Hospital to the intersection with the West Coast road near the former DBMC building. We did this knowing that this road is heavily traversed being the main road for persons using the West Coast road to the island’s main hospital, the Princess Margaret Hospital,” the public works minister detailed.

“The existing road has been in a poor state with sections showing signs of road edge failure and the existence of inadequate drainage structures. In addition, the deep open drains on that road, pose a risk to both pedestrians and drivers especially at night,” she explained further.

Work will include construction of new drainage structures to include box drains and slipper drains; construction of a retaining wall; construction of new sidewalks and improving the existing sidewalks and removal of the existing asphalt surface, backfilling and compacting to new road levels.

The Public Works Minister is confident in the timely delivery of this project based on the years of experience of the contractor. “They will deliver quality work as per the specifications of the design within the stipulated timeframe of 22 weeks. To the contractor, I say congratulations.”

Hon Blanchard asked for patience during the five-month process and urged residents of lower Goodwill and commuters of the area to proceed with caution and follow all on-site directions during the project.

Plans for this project was included in the 2016/2017 budget of the Dominica Labour Party Government.

Funding for this project will come from the Highway Maintenance Levy.
