At least one Petite Savanne family will soon sleep comfortably in their own home since Tropical Storm Erika tore their community apart.
The Government Housing Loans Board has selected a family of eight to claim a three bedroom home in Wallhouse which was available for use by the Board.
Felix Thomas is Chairman of the Board.
“We were deeply saddened by the fact that Tropical Storm Erika caused so much havoc ad destruction as it relates to the housing stock of the island. The Board took a conscious decision to assist in whatever way it could- one family at a time or otherwise-but to start somewhere.”
Joanne Moise and her family of five took in three additional children whose home was destroyed by Tropical Storm Erika.
Mrs. Moise is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the Board.
“I did not lose my house but I had to be evacuated. During the storm, the four children and their father left their home and came to mine at about 6am. About 15-20 minutes after, their house was gone. When I was leaving Petite Savanne, they were with me.”
Moise explained that her immediate family had suddenly grown with the addition of her husband’s cousins. She welcomes the growth and pledges to take care of them all.
“Thank you very much for placing me in such a lovely home,” she said.
The Government Housing Loans Board assures that will continue to assist in whatever way that it can.
The home is rent-free to the occupants for as long as it is required.
This story is just one. Almost 300 families lost their homes due to Tropical Storm Erika.
