It’s official. The 19th edition of Dominica’s World Creole Music Festival will not take place this year.
Hon. Minister for Tourism, Senator Robert Tonge made the announcement at a press conference on Friday September 11th.
The Minister explained that the decision was prompted by the losses suffered by nationals during the passage of Tropical Storm Erika.
“The country of Dominica remains in a state of shock and mourning following the passage of Tropical Storm Erika which has caused significant loss of life, property and significant damage to the country’s infrastructure...in excess of $600m.
“To-date, the WCMF organizers have invested financially or the planning and staging of the event. Significant additional resources are required to bring the event to fruition. As such the organizers feel it prudent, out of respect for the loss of life to cancel the event as we know it.” He referred to the heavy reveling aspect of the festival.
“Most artists scheduled to perform this year have declare their willingness to postpone their performances to next year. We thank the numerous patrons for their support over the previous years and the message of solidarity in this trying time. We look forward to your support in 2016,” he said.
Minister Tonge added however that in the messages of solidarity, patrons and the private sector expressed willingness to support a relief concert in aid of Dominica’s recovery.
Discussions took place to decide on even that would bring people together to take part in relief efforts during the day and socialize at night.
The event will happen at the same time as the festival. He added that by Wednesday September 16th, more details will be forthcoming.
So far, the NCCU Cadence-lypso show is planned for the Friday, October 30th with proceeds going towards relief.
Saturday will mean a “pure benefit concert” where performers and service providers will offer their talents at no cost to organizers so proceeds can go towards the rebuilding efforts.
Activities will continue on the Sunday.
Hon. Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit believes that hosting the WCMF at this time could send a wrong message to countries willing to contribute towards Dominica’s recovery efforts.
He said, “Our people have to be practical; we have to be real… The country is going to need to raise a lot of money and we have to look at the situation as a whole. I cannot go apportioning things. We have to put everything on the table considering all the issues and ramifications.
“If we go ahead and host the festival, people who have taken the money that they do not have to help you in this very difficult time, what will they say?”
