Proceeds of a summer hike planned for Saturday August 11, 2012 will go towards assisting twelve needy children to attend school in September.
The hike has been organized by the Waitukubuli National Trail Management Unit in partnership with Digicel, Krazy Tees and Loubiere Water.
Education Officer for the West District, Margaret Jules-Royer has welcomed the initiative.
Royer, in addressing a press conference on Tuesday, said the Ministry of Education is grateful that citizens can come together to assist the less fortunate.
“We know it is very difficult for parents, especially for those persons who have children leaving the primary school and entering the secondary school, who move from doing five/six subjects a day, to sometimes as much as thirteen subjects in first form. So you can well understand the expense parents have to go through and the Ministry is very grateful that you could come together to contribute immensely to these people, and especially the children of Dominica. In these economic times we cannot say too much thanks, we can just continue to say thank you.”
The three-hour hike will take place along a section of Segment Five of the National Trail.
Hikers will begin the journey from the National Trail Research and Interpretive Facility in Pond Case.
Operations Officer and Head of the Management Unit of the Waitukubuli National Trail, Roselyn Paul views the upcoming hike as another opportunity to promote the Waitukubuli National Trail.
“This is now an opportunity for all of you hikers, Dominicans, visitors who are on island right now to partner for this worthy cause. It’s walking for exercise for health and for continued promotion of the trail. We urge everyone to be part of this unique and special event.”
Acting Country Manager for DIGICEL, Johnny Ingle is delighted to be associated with the initiative. He would like to see many individuals and groups coming together to participate and support the event.
“I look forward to [the hike] and I encourage the people, the agencies, the hiking club,s the youth committees, the Government bodies and the business community of Dominica to actively support the most worthy of causes. Our children are our future and unless we support them there will be no progress. I personally will be there on the 11th August, I will be undertaking this walk because I recognize the value and importance of lending a helping hand to those who need it most.”
The students will be selected by village councils and school principals across the island and twelve qualifying students will be recipient of the school supplies.
The hike is expected to be two and a half to three hours long and is rated as easy to moderate.
Interested persons can register at Digicel Dominica’s office on the Roseau Bayfront, the Waitukubuli National Trail (WNT) Head Office at Pond Case, or at the WNT desk at Forestry Division on Valley Road.
The gathering point will be on the Bayfront at 6:30 am on August 11th, 2012.
Registration costs $40.00 and each participant will receive a t-shirt, water, transportation and guidance along the trail.
