DEEP Positively Impacts The Education System

The Dominica Education Enhancement Project (DEEP) is sowing positive fruits in the education sector.

According to the Hon. Minister for Education and Human Resource Development, Petter Saint Jean, the $11M project which started three years ago has transformed the education sector since its inception in 2010.

“…DEEP really was comprehensive project to address the issue of developing and augmenting the delivery of education in Dominica. We have a number of components: one component focuses on teacher training and development so that under the programme, stretched over a four-year period, a number of teachers were trained locally, regionally and internationally in different discipline,” the Minister explained.

The project not only focuses on academics but prepares Dominican students for the international market with the required skills for the wider workforce.

The Hon. Minister says when the idea was conceived, the Ministry recognized that if Dominica’s economy was to expand, Dominica needed to move away from a traditional base and focus on development of the individual as a whole.

The project not only targets students at school but is a means of re-tooling the Dominican workforce.

Areas of emphasis under the project include teacher training, curriculum development, special education, numeracy and maintenance.
