The first Mahaut Guide Company is calling on more young women to take up leadership roles in their communities.
The call comes as the company celebrates its 50th anniversary since becoming operational.
Commissioner for the West, Marcia Dublin revealed, “It started back in 1965 by Mrs. Annette Jno Charles-Steadman who was visiting St. Joseph and noticed that the girls were involved in community activities and activities for self development.
”She decided that she needed something like that in Mahaut so she requested assistance from the St. Joseph Guides…and they Guide movement was formed in Mahaut.”
A number of activities are being planned to commemorate the occasion including a health fair on Saturday November 28th at the Mahaut Market.
“We are having a panel discussion on Friday November 27th on the way forward for the youth in the community of Mahaut and we have several panelists from the Scouts, Guides, the President of the National Youth Council and a young preacher.
“We are hiking the segment of the trail which runs through Mahaut on December 4th and we will be launching our commemorative magazine on December 29th.”
A Seniors Garden Party is planned “to bridge the gap between the young people and the elderly.” the Girl Guides will serve the elderly at that event.
A talent show is also on the cards.
According to Dublin, guiding teaches self-esteem, team work and helps girls to realize their fullest potential.
Dublin hopes that more women will be willing to serve.
“In the next fifty years, we want to see a more dynamic organization which would be more [far-reaching]. We want to see much more young people coming forward to reach out and help the younger ones.”
The company celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 22, 2015.
